Jerwood Space

Jerwood Space, London
Architects: Paxton Locher Architects, Munkenbeck & Marshall Architects
Opened in 1998, extended in 2006/2007

The Jerwood Space is a major initiative of the Jerwood Foundation and was conceived by Alan Grieve. Housed in the converted buildings of a Victorian school in Southwark, this unique venue offers affordable rehearsal spaces for dance, theatre and music companies to develop their work. Both established and emerging music, theatre, drama and dance groups work side-by-side, the latter benefiting from subsidised space.

The main building, refurbished by Paxton Locher Architects, opened in 1998 with five fully equipped rehearsal spaces. The school's bike and garage sheds were converted into a spectacular 2,600 square foot Gallery which shows Jerwood Visual Arts ' prize exhibitions and other contemporary art. Its cafe, which is open to the public, and its striking glazed courtyard by Satellite Architects, are available to hire for events.

The Jerwood Space was extended in 2006-2007 with a magnificent rooftop extension by Munkenbeck & Marshall Architects. The new rooftop studios and meeting rooms restore the second storey of the building lost to bomb damage in 1941. The Jerwood Space now provides the largest dedicated rehearsal space in London with all the facilities required by major producers and directors of the performing arts.
