The Jerwood Gallery is an exciting project to create a permanent home for the Jerwood Art Collection, and a new regional venue for the Jerwood Visual Arts programme on the Stade in Hastings. Developed and fully funded by the Jerwood Foundation, the ambition is to create a major new cultural venue with regional and national importance, contribute to the regeneration of Hastings, and build fruitful partnerships with local organisations.
The Jerwood Foundation's aim for this project is to put the Jerwood Art Collection on public display for the first time, and bring the work of the UK's best young artists to the Hastings community through the Jerwood Visual Arts programme. Designed by HAT Projects, the building will be purpose-built to create the best possible environment for experiencing art, with a design that responds sensitively and creatively to the unique site on the Stade, and engineered to be as environmentally efficient as possible, with CO2 emissions of around 40% compared to a standard gallery design. This £4m project is a major capital initiative for the Foundation and we aim to open the gallery in 2011.
Jerwood Painting Collection
Since the Foundation's first purchase in 1993 the Jerwood Painting Collection has grown steadily in stature and importance to include around one hundred and fifty British oil paintings and works on paper. The collection's core areas are figurative and abstract works from between the First World War and the 1960s, and contemporary works by artists associated with Jerwood, including several winners of the Jerwood Painting Prize. The collection represents a personal rather than academic reading of Modern British art, resulting in a selection that is accessible, surprising, and of sustained quality.
