Earthrise (originally entitled, Western Roll) resulted from a residency at Lethbridge University in Canada, where Lyons responded to the vastness of the skies, the space of the prairies and the rawness of the elements. The work grew directly from his experience of seeing earth from an Indian reservation sucked high into the air by the intense and swirling winds which appear as if from nowhere during the spring in Alberta. In more general terms Earthrise communicates a burst of energy springing from the depths of the earth and gives material substance to the intangible forces of nature.
