The Crusader
Harry Everington (1929-2000)
The Crusader
bronze
1992
1.8 m high
Everington worked in limestone, wood, clay and steel, although stone was his preferred medium. The Crusader was modelled in clay before it was cast in bronze and its dynamic and fluid form comes from Everington's use of the chisel to carve out the clay. Everington worked instinctively and The Crusader is far from being an academic observation. It is closer to being a passionate expression of the sculptor's romantic idealism. He wrote, 'The ancient idealist charges headlong with bent sword and winded horse into the brick wall of contemporary life. The sculpture poses a question: Is this image one of pathos or is its heroism to be respected?' (Artist's statement).
